Nicole Fitzsimons was an inspiring and talented dancer and devoted footy fan with an infectious love of life. At twenty–four years young, Nicole was on the brink of achieving her dream as a sports journalist when her life was tragically taken in a motorbike accident in Thailand in October 2012.
Nicole’s family and friends could not find a suitable charity that honoured Nicole’s passions and love of life and decided to establish The Nicole Fitzsimons Foundation before her memorial service to leave a lasting legacy. Nicole Fitzsimons Foundation has two main goals:
- to educate young Australians on travel safety
- assist talented and dedicated young performing artists and sportspeople who need
- financial assistance to aspire to their dreams
Nicole would never ride a motorcycle in Australia, however, she relaxed her safety standards and adopted local safety standards which tragically cost her life and left her family eternally heartbroken. Kate Fitzsimons, Nicole’s younger sister, started researching overseas deaths and accidents and was horrified at the statistics, particularly, in S.E. Asia. Kate felt she needed to raise awareness on importance of travel safety to young Australians, followed her heart and gave up her corporate career in March 2013 to dedicate herself fulltime to saving other families her pain.
Kate researched, then designed a travel safety presentation for senior high school students. The emotional and powerful presentation included the importance of travel insurance, road safety, Smartraveller, respect of local culture, drinking spiking and many other simple but important travel safety tips to help bring Aussie travellers home safely. Kate leaves each student with a booklet to fit with their passport that has safety tips, contact details in an emergency, important websites when booking an overseas trip. Kate has now educated over 30,000 students in all states of Australia on behalf of Nicole Fitzsimons Foundation. She has presented in regional towns including Kalgoorlie, Armidale, Katherine, all state capital cities in public, Catholic and private schools. Nicole was a passionate and talented ballerina who loved all sport, particularly rugby league and was grateful for the opportunities she received to enjoy dance and sport. Nicole was saddened when she saw many of her talented friends give up their passion or miss opportunities due to financial hardship or living in regional areas. Nicole’s Foundation honours her passion for performing arts by makes grant to young performing artists and sportspeople to aspire to their dreams. Nicole Fitzsimons Foundation also shares Nicole’s passion for dance by offering disadvantaged youth and children dance programs.
